Beginning January 1, 2027, some adults ages 19 to 64 must meet “work requirements” — or have an exception or exclusion — to stay on Vermont Medicaid.
To meet the requirements, these adults will need to have at least $580 in household income in a month, or they need to work, volunteer or attend school at least 80 hours in a month.
They can also complete a combination of these activities to comply.

Who does NOT have a work requirement?
Some people will not have a work requirement.
When you apply for or renew your Medicaid coverage in 2027, Vermont Health Connect will check to see if you do not have work requirements.
- For some situations, VHC will check the month you apply or renew your Medicaid and the months in your “look-back period”
- For other situations, VHC will only check the months in your “look-back” period.
You only need to have the situation for one month to not have a work requirement.
When is the look-back period?
New applicants have a one-month look-back period. This is the month before the month you apply.
If you already get Medicaid, you will have a 12-month look-back period the first time you renew in 2027. This is the 12 months before your renewal month.
After your first review, you will need to renew your Medicaid every 6 months and will have a 6-month look-back period. This will be the 6 months before your renewal month.
