Tax-Time Tips: Get Tax Credits ($$), Find Tax-Filing Help, and File On Time

Alarm clock and words: Tax time

It’s that time of year again: Tax season. For most filers, the deadline for 2024 tax returns is April 15, 2025.

Some tips that might put money in your pocket

  1. Filing taxes is a requirement for many taxpayers, but it is also a way to claim financial assistance in the form of refundable tax credits. If you are eligible, tax credits can GIVE you money, including: Child Tax Credit, EITC, Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit, educational tax credits, property tax credit or renters credit. Make sure you are claiming the tax credits you are entitled to!
  2. If you owe taxes, be sure to file your return on time, even if you don’t have the money to pay what you might owe. Why? Because the IRS has a penalty if you file late, and there is a separate penalty if you don't pay on time. It's better to only have one of those penalties!
  3. Many Vermonters don't have to pay for tax filing help. Use a free service or free filing software. Now is the time to get free tax filing help!
