ROADMAP: Getting Your Security Deposit Back in Vermont

Collect the Judgment

After the small claims hearing, the judge will make a decision. If the judge decides that your landlord owes you money for the deposit, they have 30 days to pay.

If the landlord does not pay within 30 days, you can ask the court for help. The court can “garnish” (take money from) their wages or bank accounts, or put a lien on property they own.

Our small claims Roadmap has more details on small claims court and how to collect a judgment.

If you have a hearing with the Burlington Housing Board of Review, you will get a written decision within 30 days. Both you and the landlord have the right to appeal the decision to Superior Court. You can also take the landlord to court if they refuse to pay after the review board decides you should get your deposit back.
