Medicaid pays for low-cost or free health care coverage for:
- children and low-income adults living in Vermont (includes Dr. Dynasaur, which has more benefits for children and youth under age 19 and for pregnant Vermonters)
- low-income Vermonters who are blind, disabled or age 65 or older
- low-income Vermonters who are disabled and able to work
Medicaid also pays for long-term care (called Choices for Care) for Vermonters who are under the income and resource limits.
Cost sharing
Medicaid has some cost-sharing (co-pay) requirements. They are:
- $1.00 - $3.00 prescription copay if you do not have Medicare Part D prescription coverage (See Copayments on the Department of Vermont Health Access website for exceptions)
- $1.20 - $8.25 copays if have you have Medicare Part D prescription coverage
- $3.00 dental copay for some visits (two cleanings and preventative exams are free each year)
- $3.00 copay for each outpatient hospital visit
- $1.00 - $3.00 copay for durable medical equipment
How to apply
Medicaid for Children and Adults
You can apply for Medicaid at any time during the year.
Children and low-income adults who are younger than 65 years old, and not blind or disabled, can apply for Medicaid by:
- Calling Vermont Health Connect (1-855-899-9600)
- Filling out an online application
- Printing and filling out a paper application
Medicaid for the Aged, Blind and Disabled (MABD) & Medicaid for the Working Disabled (MWD)
Low-income Vermonters who are blind, disabled, or age 65 or older, as well as low-income Vermonters who are disabled and able to work, can apply for Medicaid by:
- Filling out the online form at https://mabdapply.vermont.gov/
- Printing the 205ALLMED application and filling it out by hand
- Calling Green Mountain Care (1-800-250-8427) and asking them to send you an application
If your income goes down for any reason or if the number of people in your household changes, you may be able to get Medicaid even if you applied before and did not qualify.
If you apply through Vermont Health Connect, you will find out if you are eligible for Medicaid. You will also find out if you can get help paying for a qualified health plan.
