Your health information is confidential. This means that your medical records or information that you share with your provider, such as a doctor, can only be shared with others under certain conditions.
For example:
- Your doctor can share and use your health information to take care of you and to work with other providers to take care of you.
- In most cases, your provider cannot give your health information to other people, such as your employer, without your permission.

Filing a Health Privacy Complaint
If you believe that someone has looked at your records or shared your medical information without your permission, you can file a complaint. You can:
- File a health information privacy complaint with the U.S. Office of Civil Rights.
- File a complaint against a doctor, nurse or other medical professional.
