New: “Emergency Medicaid”
Although you may have an immigration status that means you can’t get Medicaid, you may be able to have emergency health care paid in part or in full.
What is emergency health care?
- labor and delivery if you are pregnant
- sudden, dangerous medical problems like heart attacks or being hurt in an accident.
How do I get emergency care paid for?
- Apply for Medicaid. You can apply online, over the phone at 1-855-899-9600, with a local assister, or on a paper application. It’s a good idea to say you want “Emergency Medicaid” when you apply.
- You will get a letter telling you what you need to do.
- If your care meets the rules, Medicaid will pay some or all of your bills.
Getting Emergency Medicaid will not impact your immigration status.
Starting in October 2021: The State of Vermont will make it possible for health care providers to get funding for furnishing health care services to pregnant persons and children who would be eligible for Vermont Medicaid except for their immigration status (in accordance with Act 48 (H.430) of 2021). Services furnished on or after July 1, 2021, will be eligible for funding.
