This letter will only stop the debt collection agency calls. The collection agency may still take further legal action. These actions could include:
- sending you letters
- filing a lawsuit
- selling the account to some other collection agency
- taking other legal action
Collection agencies have names like Unifund, Green Mountain Bureau, or Palisades. The collection agency is not the creditor. It is a business that is paid to collect debts. Most of the time, the collection agency will have purchased your debt from the original creditor, including the right to sue you for the debt.
Original creditors (Chase, Citibank, OneMain Financial, for example) can still call you even if you send a letter.
This is not a dispute letter. The debt will continue to be reported to the three credit reporting agencies.

These form letters will not stop the debt collector from taking other legal action. Even if you send a creditor this letter, they may still be able to:
- call you at home
- file a lawsuit against you
- sell the account to another debt collector
- take other legal action
