If you got a 1095-A and have a problem that leads to an IRS audit or tax bill, here are two ways to get help:
- Vermont Legal Aid’s Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) may be able to give you advice about things you can do or how to handle the situation. They may also be able to represent you in an audit or appeal. VLA’s Low Income Taxpayer Clinic cannot help you file your taxes or apply for a taxpayer identification number.
To get help from VLA, your income has to be less than 250% of the federal poverty level (FPL) in most cases. The chart below shows the 250% FPL income limit for the number of people you claim on your tax return. Call 1-800-889-2047 to ask for help from VLA’s Low Income Taxpayer Clinic.
- If you are over VLA's income limit, you can call the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) for help. TAS helps both businesses and individuals, and there is no income limit. However, they are very busy, so they usually can only take cases when the IRS dispute is causing a hardship to the taxpayer. The number to call for help is (802) 859-1052 or 1-877-777-4778.
