Filing a Complaint Against a Doctor

You can file a complaint against a doctor if you think the doctor has been unprofessional. Learn more about unprofessional conduct in the Vermont Statutes.

Important: Before you submit a complaint, you should try to solve the problem directly with your doctor. After you file a complaint, your doctor may decide to stop seeing you as a patient.

Tip: You should find a new doctor and get a copy of your medical records sent to your new doctor before you file the complaint.

File your complaint against a doctor, physician’s assistant, or a podiatrist (foot doctor) with the Vermont Board of Medical Practice. Here is a link to the Vermont Board of Medical Practice complaint form.

After you fill out the complaint form, mail it to the address at the top of the form.

If the Medical Practice Board finds that your doctor acted unprofessionally, it can:

• issue warnings
• take away, suspend, or place conditions on the doctor’s licenses and certifications
• take other actions to protect the public’s health and safety.
