Complaints
In this section you will find information about how to file a complaint about a hospital, a doctor, nurse or other health care provider, Vermont Health Connect, Green Mountain Care or an insurance company. We also discuss privacy complaints.
If you decide to file a complaint after thinking about it, it’s a good idea to find a new doctor first. Your doctor may decide to stop seeing you since you are an unhappy patient. A new doctor may not accept you as a patient if they know that you filed a complaint against another doctor.
You or your new provider should get a copy of your medical records before you file the complaint. Learn more on our How to Get Your Medical Records page.
Finding a New Medicaid Provider
If you have Medicaid or Dr. Dynasaur, you can look for a provider using their Healthcare Provider Lookup Directory. The directory lets you search for a provider in different ways:
- You can search the directory using a doctor’s name or office name.
- You can search for a type of provider (primary care physician, dentist, mental health or other specialty.)
- You can use your town or zip code to find a provider close to where you live.
You can also call Green Mountain Care Member Services at 1-800-250-8427 to find out which providers in your area take Medicaid.
Medical Malpractice
If you want to take legal action against a doctor because you believe they made a mistake that harmed you (medical malpractice), you should not file a complaint. Instead, you should contact a private attorney to discuss what happened with your provider.
We do not provide help in these cases. If you need a lawyer, you can contact the Vermont Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service. Usually you can get up to a 30-minute meeting for $25 or less when you use this service. Make sure to ask the lawyer about the fee when you set up your meeting with them.
