Generic Drugs
Generic drugs are like brand name drugs but they cost less. Ask your doctor
if there is a generic version of the drug you need.
State Pharmacy Programs
The State of Vermont has several programs to help people pay for
prescription drugs. Do you pay a lot for your prescription drugs? Find out if
you can get help. Call Vermont’s Member Services at (800) 250-8427 to
find out.
General Assistance
General Assistance (GA) is a program that helps low-income people in
emergencies. Do you need prescription drugs that you can’t afford? Apply
for GA at your local Department for Children and Families (DCF) office. They
will tell you if you can get help. GA will pay for your drugs if you qualify.
Free Clinics
There are many free clinics in Vermont. Many free clinics give free
prescription drugs to needy clients. Call the Office of Health Care
Ombudsman at (800) 917-7787 to find the nearest clinic.
Free Samples
Tell your doctor you are having trouble paying for your prescription drugs.
Sometimes doctors can give their patients samples they get for free from the
drug companies.
Buying Drugs from Canada
Some prescription drugs are cheaper in Canada. Here are two ways to order
drugs from Canada.
I-SaveRx:
I-SaveRX was set up by the State of Vermont. It’s a way for
Vermonters to buy prescription drugs through Canada, Ireland and the
United Kingdom. All Vermonters are eligible. You can only buy certain
drugs through I-SaveRx. I-SaveRx drugs can cost up to 50% less than
buying the same drugs in the United States. Call (866) 472-8333 or
visit the I-SaveRx website at www.i-saverx.com.
CanadaPharmacy.com
CanadaPharmacy.com is a Canadian pharmacy that sells prescription
drugs to Americans over the internet. It may be cheaper to buy drugs
through this website than to buy them in the United States. Call (800)
891-0844 or visit their website at www.canadapharmacy.com.
Drug Company Programs
Some prescription drug companies give away their drugs or sell them for
less to low and middle income people. Do you want to find out about these
programs? Call the company that makes your drug. Find their telephone
number or email address by looking them up in the yellow pages or online.
Free Medicine Program
Free Medicine Program is a nonprofit group. It can help you find out if the
company that makes the drug you need has a discount program. Free
Medicine Program is an excellent resource for reducing the cost of your
medications. Call them at (800) 921-0072 or visit their website at
www.freemedicineprogram.com
Partnership for Prescription Assistance
This organization is very similar to the Free Medicine Program. Call them at
(888) 477-2669 or visit their website at www.pparx.org.
Costco
Costco and other wholesalers often sell prescription drugs for much less than
local pharmacies. You don’t need a Costco card to buy prescription drugs at
their stores.
Mail Order Pharmacies
Do you take a prescription drug that you will need to take for a long time? It
may be cheaper to buy a lot of your prescription drugs at one time from a
mail order pharmacy.
RxOutreach
Rx Outreach is run by Express Scripts. Express Scripts is a mail order
pharmacy. Rx Outreach has over fifty types of generic prescription drugs.
You need to fill out an application and get a prescription from your doctor.
You can order these drugs by mail. Call (800) 769-3880 or visit their
website at www.rxoutreach.com/en/.
